Ylang ylang (pronounced ee-lang ee-lang) is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, Indonesia, and parts of Polynesia. Its botanical name is Cananga odorata. The name “ylang ylang” comes from the Tagalog word ilang ilang, meaning “wilderness,” alluding to the tree’s natural habitat. Ylang ylang is best known for its fragrant essential oil, extracted from its star-shaped yellow flowers via steam distillation.
